OKLAHOMA CITY – October 7, 2024 – The new art exhibition, Impression, is on display in the Tulsa World | Lorton Family Gallery at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. Featuring the work of Oklahoma City artist Marissa Raglan the exhibit will be on display through December 19.
The public is invited to attend a free artist reception this Thursday, October 10, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, 1400 Classen Drive, Oklahoma City, to meet Raglin and learn more about her work.
Raglin creates ethereal, whimsical collages compiled from images "rescued from thrift stores, half-priced book stores, and estate sales", as she says. Vividly pigmented artwork contrasts with blank spaces, creating room for conversation. Her pieces evoke feelings of maternal love, as well as questions about the duality of motherhood as both personal and communal.
"My work celebrates women and juxtaposes old-fashioned ideologies within new, contemporary settings and surroundings," says Raglin. "Creating with imagery delicately removed with a cutting blade from vintage magazines, books and postcards, the images are reassembled and become unified, telling one story."
For Impression, Raglin constructed a collaborative project with fellow artists and mothers: Mary James Ketch, Angie LaPaglia, Denise Duong, and Liz Boudreaux. Building upon one another, each work is inspired by the impression of the work produced before it, creating a truly unique artistic journey.
"The subject of motherhood has been depicted throughout the history of art, reflecting the eras and cultures in which they were created. Impression explores a mother's complex role, one that is unique while also universal", says Mattie Barlow, Oklahoma Hall of Fame Associate Director of Archives & Curatorial Projects and curator for this exhibit.
Marissa Raglin is a visual artist living in Oklahoma City currently working in handmade collage and resin. Her work celebrates women, motherhood, and community. Raglin has exhibited her work both locally and nationally. She was the 2017-18 Skirvin Paseo Artist in Residence, the 2015 Artist Inc. Live OKC Fellow, and is currently a resident artist in the historic Studio Six gallery located in the Paseo Arts District in Oklahoma City.
